The gospel provides for man’s greatest need: Deliverance from sin.
From its Penalty (Rom 8:1) from its Power (Rom 6) from its Presence (Rom 8:30).
Faith = believing what we’re told even though we’ve never tested it
Faith is simply acting upon what God’s Word says about Christ’s work for us.
Faith is only as good as its object.
Paul’s use of “faith” & “believe” is always in close conjunction with the crucified & risen Jesus.
Faith is more than just agreement to truths about Jesus.
Saving Faith is TRUST, not just Belief. And there’s a difference.
It is resting, committing, surrendering, leaning, surrendering continually to the Lord Jesus.
– everyone who believes, Jews & GentilesThe Gospel Extends to everywhere faith is manifested. There is no discrimination of race or culture. The gospel has universal application. Gen 22:18 – all nations will be blessed Psa 86:9 – All nations you have made shall come & worship before you, O Lord; and shall glorify Your name. Zech 2:11 – And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people Acts 1:8 – …in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria & uttermost part of the earth
“for” = why the gospel is God’s saving power. It reveals = uncover
The righteousness God demands is revealed not just TO our minds so that we can understand the gospel, it is revealed IN us, actually giving us what is needed to believe the gospel.
God set a standard that only He could provide so that nobody could boast. (Eph 2:8-9)Rom 3:21-22 – And now the righteousness of God apart from the law is manifest. The righteousness of God is by faith in Jesus Christ unto all who believe. Rom 4:3 – Abraham believed God & it was counted to him for righteousness. Phil 3:8-9 – I count all things but lost for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, whom I’ve suffered the loss of all things and do count them but refuse that I may win Christ. And be found in Him not having mine own righteousness which is of the law but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.
Habakkuk 2:4 – the just (or the righteous) shall live by faith.
Habakkuk used these words to instruct the righteous how to face the difficulties of life: by faith in God’s purposes which are always right.
But Paul says – the one who is righteous by faith (or justified by faith) will live.
By faith the gospel gives salvation unto eternal life.
But those without faith receive wrath (18).
